The Mental Domain of Living

The mental domain is a tough one to define. It includes a variety of different things from how we think about ourselves and others to the mindsets we approach different situations with.

We interpret our entire lives through the mental domain. It can literally be the difference between living a good and positive life or a poor and negative one.

As I said in the intro, the mental domain really does have the potential to influence our entire lives. The perspectives and mindsets we choose to embody flavor our interpretations of our lives.

When you view the mental domain in this way you can really begin to see how poor mindsets and mental health issues can really have a huge negative impact on us. The mental domain is not something to be taken lightly.

So I now let’s get into exactly what the mental domain is…

What is the Mental Domain?

The mental domain basically consists of our mindsets and thought processes. It’s not simply your IQ, which makes it a little different from the emotional domain which largely revolved around our emotional IQ.

Your intelligence only really comes into play in this domain because it often influences how you think about problems.

Let me be clear here though. Just because you have a high IQ doesn’t mean your way of thinking is better than someone else’s is.

All I am saying is that your intelligence influences your thought process. Both can still be negative. Both can also, still be positive.

Also, people of all IQs have the ability to choose to adopt whatever mindset they want.

For example, anyone can adopt a positive mindset which motivates them to pursue their interests and goals and contribute to the community. Also, anyone can adopt a negative mindset where they limit and prevent themselves from engaging in productive work.

Why is the Mental Domain Important?

Now I think I’ve already that the mental domain is the lens through which we interpret our entire lives. If that doesn’t emphasize its importance I don’t know what will.

The mental domain can influence how we respond to normal life stresses. It will influence whether we see them as challenges and opportunities to grow, or as energy drainers causing us to shut down. Whether we’re willing to take chances and risks to achieve our full potential, or if we’re too scared of failure to do so. It impacts whether we have a desire to grow as people and professionals. And possibly most importantly, it influences our self-acceptance. Do we have a positive evaluation of who we are, even if we aren’t completely the person we’d like to be at this point? Or do we tear ourselves down for every mistake and fault we have?

Some Questions to Assess Your Mental Domain

Since the mental domain is a very broad one, it can be hard to evaluate without some direction. So, here are some questions you can attempt to ask yourself to assess your mental domain:

“How do you approach problems and challenges?”

“What do you think about yourself?”

“Do you find yourself more often complimenting or criticising others?

“Do you have the desire to grow and improve as an individual?”

“Are you motivated to pursue your passions?”

“Do you view yourself as dependent on others or external forces? Or, do you accept responsibility for the things happening in your life?”

“Overall, do you feel as though you have more positive thoughts or negative thoughts?”

If you’d like more I could certainly think some up for you. Or if you have questions that you may people may benefit from answering please leave it in the comments!

Wrapping up…

So I think that’s all I have to say about the mental domain today. I feel that by getting you to assess your thought processes and mindsets a bit is a great first step towards familiarizing yourself with the mental domain.

As you go about your day try to stay aware of your mindsets and thinking. If they are positive, that’s excellent! Keep it up! If they are poor though, think about how you can go about improving them!

Until then though, stay excellent!
