The Physical Domain of Living

Like I said on the very first page of my website, a healthy physical domain is a cornerstone of any balanced lifestyle.

The amount you invest into the physical domain will definitely vary according to your personality type and life goals.

So let’s talk about what exactly the physical domain is!

Now before I get into this topic. I think it needs to be said that the physical domain could potentially mean many different things for many different people. There is no one uniform definition of any of the life domains for that matter.

That should make sense as I’m constantly discussing with you how balanced living needs to be a personalized experience to truly begin working for you. The goal of me writing this article is really to get you thinking about what the physical domain of living means to you personally.

With that being said, let me give a general description of the physical domain just to get us started off and to make sure we’re on the same page.

What is the Physical Domain?

This part of the article is going to be quick. I’m far more interested in helping you figure out your personal values within this domain.

The physical domain is really exactly what it sounds like, it’s your physical health. I’ve found in the past though that the term physical health can be misleading.

Your physical health is not solely what you would gain from going to the gym every day. That’s definitely an important part of this domain, but it’s not the only part.

For me, the physical domain is a blend of your bodies physical ability, the fuel you put into it (i.e. your nutrition), and how you work to maintain your body’s health and functioning.

That was a pretty quick description of the physical domain. So, if you have questions just send me a message through the contact page.

Now let’s get into figuring out what this domain actually means to you!

What Does the Physical Domain Mean to YOU?

The first step to outlining what the physical domain means to you is defining your physical goals.

So take a moment, grab a piece of paper and pen, and do it with me below.

I’d try to outline at least 2-3 goals you have for this domain. Here are some of mine:

  • As a soccer player (football player outside of the Americas haha) I value my cardio and want to be fit enough to play an entire game without fatigue being an issue.
  • I want to be physically healthy for a long time. That means I can’t only consider the exercise portion of the physical domain, but must consider the nutritional aspect as well.
  • Body maintenance and endurance are also important to me. This means I should dedicate time for activities such as stretching and rest.

Now that we’ve defined you’re goals it’s time to outline what the physical domain means to you.

Ranking the Value of those Goals

Now that you’ve outlined your goals I want you to rank them. Go from the most valued goal to the least valued goal. This is how it would look for me:

  • Running/Improving bodily endurance
  • Maintenance of body functioning through rest and stretching
  • Nutritional Intake

Just for clarity, even though I’ve listed nutritional intake last it’s obviously still important to me. It’s just less important to me then my bodily endurance and maintenance.

This could vary significantly for you. You may share some of my goals but in a different order, or you may have different physical goals entirely.

Take some time to think about how you want to rank your goals. Once you’ve got a ranking you’re happy with move on to the next step.

Interpreting Your Rankings

This is the final and probably most important step of this process. This is where we’ll get into exactly what the physical domain means to you.

Here, what I want you to do is interpret what each goal is really asking of you relevant to the physical domain of living.

For example:

  • My cardio goal is asking me to invest time and energy into training. This is a fitness goal.
  • My stretching goal, however, is a little less physical. Here I’m aiming to maintain my body and help it recover. This would fall into the maintenance side of the physical domain in my opinion.
  • Then finally, I have my nutritional well-being goal. This goal also focuses more on bodily maintenance as well as physical activity preparation as it fuels us.

Regardless of how I have classified these goals, you can see that I have interpreted them in ways that have made sense to me. If I had presented you with these same goals earlier, you may have interpreted them very differently.

Once you’ve identified what each of your goals means to you, you can figure out what is important to you within the physical domain.

You can see from my goals and interpretations that I have a broad physical domain.

Now that I have this understanding of the physical domain I can incorporate it into my balanced lifestyle in a way that uniquely fits my goals.

I shouldn’t just go out running every day. A better idea would be to create a running schedule that includes running days as well as rest/stretch days. I should also consider developing a nutrition plan for myself to keep my body healthy and energized.

Let’s Wrap This Up

I’ve gone on for a while already in this article. I hope you’ve stuck around to the end. If you have congrats! You’ve taken the time to figure out what the physical domain of living means to you. Now you can begin applying it to your life to help you achieve your physical domain and balanced living goals!

If you have any further questions. Please don’t hesitate to send me an email. I do my best to respond to all of them.

Well, that’s it for this time.
